If you’re looking for a massage here in Bountiful, UT, you’ve probably noticed there are a lot of options—and not a lot of clarity about what actually makes them different.
At On Point Therapeutic Massage, we offer two main types of sessions:
Therapeutic Massage
Essential Massage
Both are hands-on, professional massage therapy sessions. The difference is really about what your body needs right now—problem-solving or maintenance.
Therapeutic Massage - for pain, injuries, and “something is not right here”
This is the more focused session.
Therapeutic Massage is for when your body is actively bothering you—pain, tightness, injuries or surgeries, or patterns that just keep coming back no matter how much you stretch or ignore them.
People usually book this for things like:
Neck and shoulder pain
Low back pain
Sciatica or nerve pain
Tension headaches
Sports or workout-related soreness
Plantar fasciitis
Chronic tightness from work or posture
Injury and surgery recovery and prevention
We use a mix of deep tissue massage, trigger point work, myofascial release, sports massage, and other targeted techniques depending on what’s going on in your body.
Although we aim to keep these sessions relaxing (since that’s also important for helping your nervous system reset!) -- they are more targeted and condition-focused than our Essential Massage.
If you’re dealing with something specific or stubborn, this might be the session for you.
Essential Massage — for maintenance and stress relief
The Essential Massage is more about keeping your body feeling good on a regular basis.
It’s still a full professional massage, just with a broader, more general focus. Pressure is adjusted based on what feels good for you that day.
This one is great if you want:
Regular stress relief
General tension release
Pain relief through nervous system reset
Something more accessible and easy to keep up with
To stay ahead of tightness before it turns into pain
Relaxation-based massage can still provide pain relief by calming the nervous system and reducing overall muscle tension, even without highly targeted work. Think of it as your “maintenance massage.” Not because it’s less important—but because it helps keep things from building up in the first place.
So what’s actually different?
Both sessions are done in the same calm, professional environment with hot towels and personalized care.
The difference is really this:
Therapeutic Massage = more focused work on specific problems
Essential Massage = full-body maintenance and stress relief
One is for when something is bothering you.The other is for keeping things from getting there in the first place.
Which one should you book?
Go with Therapeutic Massage if:
You’re in pain or dealing with something specific
You want deeper, targeted work
You’ve tried “regular massages” and need more focus
Go with Essential Massage if:
You want something consistent and lower-key
You’re mostly dealing with stress or general tightness
You’re looking for a regular maintenance option
Bottom line
Both are about the same goal: helping your body feel better.
They just get there in slightly different ways.
