First Massage? Here's What to Expect.

So, you’ve finally decided to book your first massage—good for you! Whether you're seeking pain relief, stress reduction, or just some well-deserved relaxation, I’m here to make sure your experience is positive and beneficial. If you’re feeling a little nervous or unsure, that’s completely normal. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect and how to prepare for your session.

Preparing for Your Massage

You don’t need to do anything special before your massage, but staying hydrated is always helpful. When your body is hydrated, your muscles are more flexible and respond better to therapeutic work. I would also recommend avoiding a big meal within 30 minutes of your appointment just so that you won't be uncomfortable lying on your stomach.

Wondering what to wear? Wear whatever works for you! This could be your everyday attire, work uniform, gym clothes, or sweats and a tee. It won't matter in your massage session.

Before We Begin: Your Comfort and Needs

When you arrive to the appointment, we will have an intake conversation where we discuss your goals and any areas of concern. I will ask you some questions to understand your needs and make a general plan of areas that I will work on. Then I’ll step out of the room for a few minutes to give you privacy while you get ready. You’ll be asked to undress to your comfort level—some people leave on their underwear, while others go without any clothing. Both options are completely fine! Then you will need to get onto the massage table underneath the top sheet and blanket.

You’ll be covered by a sheet and blanket for the entire massage, and I will only uncover the area I’m working on. Your privacy and comfort are my priority.

During the Massage

Once you’re on the table and we’ve started, the session is all about you. I use a combination of techniques—like deep tissue, trigger point therapy, and relaxation-focused strokes—based on your specific needs. In each area we work, I’ll start with light pressure to help your muscles warm up and gradually work deeper, depending on what feels right for you. I’ll check in in the beginning to see how the pressure feels, but don’t hesitate to let me know if you need it adjusted. Whether you prefer more or less pressure, this is your time to get the most out of your massage, so speak up and let me know what works best for your body!

I try to keep my talking to a minumum for your benefit, so please, you’re always welcome to speak up at any time. If the pressure needs adjusting, the table feels too warm or cool, or something just doesn’t feel right, let me know. This session is all about your comfort and well-being from start to finish.

After the Massage

After your session, I’ll step out of the room again so you can get dressed and come back down to Planet Earth. When you’re ready, come out of the room and we’ll briefly chat about anything I noticed during the massage, such as areas of tightness or suggestions for maintaining your results between sessions.

Some people feel a little sore after their massage—kind of like the tenderness you’d feel after a workout. This varies greatly from person to person, everyone reacts to massage differently. I recommend gentle stretching and staying hydrated for the rest of the day to help keep your muscles feeling great and maximize the benefits of the massage. Try to avoid heavy workouts or any extreme movements such as lifting heavy things.

Hydration is especially important because your muscles are healthiest when they’re well-hydrated, and drinking water can help your body recover and stay fluid after the massage.

If you have any lingering questions or concerns after your session, don’t hesitate to reach out! I’m always happy to help.

Final Thoughts

Your first massage doesn’t have to feel intimidating. My goal is to create a safe, welcoming space where you can relax, communicate, heal, and walk away feeling better than when you arrived.

Whether you’re looking for quick relief from “computer shoulders,” soothing sore hips, calming nerves or just a full-body therapeutic massage, I’ve got you covered.
